#AWPOWERFIFTY: Sandra Chuma

What motivated you to become an entrepreneur OR take your career in the direction you did? Is having your own business OR this role you are in something you always wanted?

I didn’t grow up wanting to be an entrepreneur.  Growing up I didn’t see anyone I knew who was in business for themselves.  What I grew up being told and seeing was that I should aspire to get a job with a ‘good company’.  And I did just that.  I worked for various large companies, and had a successful corporate career.

But I wanted something more for myself.  One of my highest values is freedom, and I knew that as long as I had to report to someone else then I was not truly free.

That inspired me to create my first business, which was a management consulting firm. This company did extremely well, and within 3 years the company had 8-figure annual revenue.  But I was burnout, and felt unfulfilled.

The work I now do with WORTHY was not something I ever intended or designed.  It’s something that evolved from my own need.  It started with me seeking to solve my own ‘problem’ of feeling unfulfilled and unworthy.  On paper I had achieved great success, but on the inside I felt empty.

Through my own personal growth and evolution, I realized that there were many other people who felt how I had felt.  I saw that there was a need, and that I had a responsibility, to share what I had learned…and what I continue to learn about what true success is.

Which woman has positively impacted you in your career/business? And what is the one lesson she taught you?

My greatest lessons have come from the women in my life.  Specifically, my mother and my grandmothers.  They are all women who didn’t just tell me, but who exemplified that you should never allow your current situation to decide your future.  They inspired me to dream beyond my circumstances.

How do you define success?

True success for me is living into your highest and greatest potential.  It’s unapologetically living a life that is aligned with the truth of who you are. It’s living a life that doesn’t just look good, but that feels good too.

One insight for anyone interested in the industry you are working in?

As a life and business coach my job is not to give people the ‘answer’ because there is no one path to creating an extraordinary life.  My job, and what I believe is the work of a good coach, is to ask the questions and to guide you to find the answers that are right for you.

What is your one key guiding principle in your work life?

The guiding principle I use is always to come back to intention.  What is my intention in doing what I am doing?  And is that aligned with my values, and with me living the fullest expression of myself.

What do you believe is the most impactful and immediate action your industry can take to Accelerate Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment. (this is the theme for INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY in 2024)

As a coach who focuses on helping people create the mindset for success, the one thing that I believe will have the biggest impact is addressing our belief systems.  We have many examples of people who came from dire circumstances, but who were able to achieve great success.  Those people were no more special than anyone else.  They just had the audacity to dream and to believe that things could be different for them.

Change starts first with thought – thinking and believing that it is possible.  And then taking action that is aligned with that belief.
