#AWPOWERFIFTY: Sophie Masipa

What motivated you to become an entrepreneur OR take your career in the direction you did? Is having your own business OR this role you are in something you always wanted?

My motivation to become an entrepreneur stem from a desire to have a lasting impact on society and the world around me. Coming from a family of academics, I was never exposed to business from a young age, but I always knew my journey would be different. I have always been drawn to the idea of making a difference and bringing about positive change in people's lives, and throughout the years of forging a love affair with the African continent, it became clear to me that the future of our beautiful continent lies in more of us creating our own African champions. While my initial ambition was to pursue a career in politics, I soon realized that entrepreneurship offered me a similar avenue to effect change and create opportunities for others. One of the key factors that motivated me was also the freedom and autonomy that comes with running your own business. The ability to make decisions, take risks, and shape the direction of my company was incredibly appealing to me. Additionally, the opportunity to create jobs and provide for families through each new hire was a powerful motivator. Despite the challenges and uncertainties that come with being an entrepreneur, I believe that this is my path and calling - creating innovative solutions, fostering growth and creating opportunities for others. I am confident that entrepreneurship is the right path for me to make a difference and leave a lasting legacy.

Which woman has positively impacted you in your career/business? And what is the one lesson she taught you?

My mother has always been my biggest inspiration in all aspects of my life. I believe though, that it takes a village to raise a child and my career and business journey have been no different. My journey has had some amazing and positive female energy around me, whether it is my network of my amazing sisterhood that guides and is there to listen to my dreams or it is the inspirational women who have held my hand or guided my steps, they have all contributed and continue to challenge me into being the best version of myself.

How do you define success?

For me, a truly successful life is one where I can be actively engaged in impactful projects that make a positive impact on the lives of others. It is a by-product of following my passion, using my unique perspective and abilities to make a difference in the world around me.

One insight for anyone interested in the industry you are working in?

I believe the growth and evolution of the marketing and communications space has really been in storytelling. The ability to take seemingly very complex ideas and convert them into narratives that are told in simple, clear and concise ways, while adding value to the clients we service is really important. I do think the increased use of AI and machine learning will drive customization, personalisation, innovation, and how we make content.

What is your one key guiding principle in your work life?

One guiding principle that has always been at the forefront of my work life is being purpose-driven.  I believe in aligning my actions and decisions with a deeper sense of meaning and intention, striving to make a positive impact and contribute to something greater than myself. By staying true to my values and purpose, I am able to stay focused and motivated even in the face of challenges. Whether I am working on a project, fostering relationships, or pursuing new opportunities, being purpose-driven helps me stay grounded and focused on what truly matters. I am committed to making a difference and leaving a legacy that reflects my core values.

What do you believe is the most impactful and immediate action your industry can take to Accelerate Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment. (this is the theme for INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY in 2024)

Increasing the participation of women in key leadership positions in Corporate and increasing the number of women-owned businesses in the industries I operate in.

The three books that changed your life?

  • Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. Her body of work could actually count as my three, whether it is Sula or Song of Solomon, her books have always had an impact on me. I am left in deep reflection each down I turn the last page on her books.

  • The intelligent investor, Benjamin Graham – a great book on investment

  • The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell – both from a networking point of view and finding that sweet spot for an idea to grow.

Self care rituals that keep you grounded

  • Spending time with my mom and family or enjoying time out with friends are really important elements of building my mental fortitude.

  • I have been practicing Transcedental Meditation since 2014 so this is my daily practice. Followed by a cup of coffee.

  • Movies and senseless TV are a great way to switch off.

  • There is also nothing I love more than reading content or seeing visual content on social media that gets me laughing.
