What motivated you to become an entrepreneur or take your career in the direction you did? Is having your own business or this role you are in something you always wanted?
Growing up in a household where both parents were freedom fighters profoundly shaped my vision of impact and service. This background, coupled with a personal encounter—creating a safe space for my niece and other young girls to learn and innovate—motivated me to start Social Coding. While I didn't always envision running my own business, I always knew I wanted to make a significant difference. Social Coding has become that vehicle, aiming to bridge the digital divide in rural areas and ultimately achieve digital democracy by 2050
Which woman has positively impacted you in your career/business? And what is the one lesson she taught you?
Amal Clooney has been a profound influence in my life. Her relentless pursuit of justice and her commitment to human rights have taught me the importance of integrity and the power of using one’s skills to advocate for those without a voice. Her career inspires me to tackle digital inequality with the same fervour, aiming to ensure that every individual, especially in rural communities, has a fair chance to succeed in the digital world.
How do you define success?
Success for me is measured by the impact one creates in their community and beyond. It’s about empowering others, achieving meaningful goals, and making sustainable changes that uplift the lives of those who are most marginalized. In the context of Social Coding, success is seeing a rural youth leverage digital tools to build a prosperous future, breaking the cycle of poverty and contributing to our nation's progress.
One insight for anyone interested in the industry you are working in?
Embrace complexity and foster adaptability. Working at the intersection of technology and social good requires an understanding that solutions must be community-specific and scalable. Each rural area has unique challenges; hence, tailored approaches in digital skills and infrastructure are essential
What is your one key guiding principle in your work life?
"Empower locally, impact globally." My principle revolves around empowering local communities with the skills and tools they need to thrive in a digital age, which, in turn, contributes to global efforts in reducing digital divides and enhancing socio-economic equality
What do you believe is the most impactful and immediate action your industry can take to Accelerate Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment?
Increasing access to digital literacy programs specifically tailored for women and girls in rural areas. By empowering them with digital skills, we not only enhance their employability but also ensure they are equipped to become innovators and leaders in their communities, thus accelerating gender equality through economic empowerment.
