Chasing Spring: 10 Outdoor Escapes to Embrace the Season’s Magic
It’s funny how the promise of longer days and warmer temperatures can make even the simplest activities feel magical. This year, I made a promise to myself, I decided that I am going to be “Dora the Explorer”, reconnect with that springtime joy by diving into some classic outdoor adventures.
Here are some outdoor activities that I’ve recently tried, and some that are on my list of things to try:
1. Nature Walks and Hikes: Oh, the joy of strolling through a blooming park, the birds chirping, and the fresh air…just what the soul needs sometimes. A simple walk or hike can be so much more than exercise, it’s a mini-vacation for your mind. And the best part? It won’t cost you that much. You don’t need a fancy gym membership to enjoy the great outdoors.
2. Outdoor Yoga: Remember that yoga class you’ve been meaning to try but just haven’t found the time for? Well, now is the chance to roll out your mat in the middle of a sunny field. The gentle breeze and the scent of fresh flowers might just make your downward dog a little more... zen, you know what I mean? It’s like bringing a piece of tranquility from the studio right into nature’s lap.
3. Cycling Adventures: Hop on your bike (it can be yours, or a rented one, but just hop on that bike) and let the wind, hit your beautiful face and guide you to new places. Cycling is a fantastic way to get your heart pumping and your stress levels down. And trust me, that feeling of freedom as you ride?! Priceless! I mean, I fell the other day when I went cycling (disclaimer, it was the first time after a decade or so, so don’t judge), but I wouldn’t trade the feeling of that experience for ANYTHING!
4. Group Fitness Classes: If you’re someone who thrives in a social setting, why not check out local outdoor fitness classes? From boot camps to dance workouts, I think these classes offer a fun way to break a sweat and meet like-minded girlies who are just as eager to leave the winter blues behind - I am still looking for a group for this, so if you know anywhere where I can go, please feel free to make a suggestion in the comments.
5. Exploring Farmers' Markets: One of my favourite Saturday ‘vibe’ is visiting the farmers' market. Walking around and in between the stalls with fresh, seasonal produce, and there’s always a buzz of excitement in the air. Spending the morning or afternoon chatting with local vendors, and picking out juicy peaches and homemade pastries. The vibrant colours and lively atmosphere of the market make it a delightful outing and a great way to support local entrepreneurs. It’s also a great opportunity to socialize and experience the local community.
6. A Perfect Picnic: One of the best ways to soak in the spring weather is through picnicking. The sound of children playing around a park, coupled with the gentle breeze, create the perfect harmony of spring. The perfect setting for a lazy afternoon of reading and people-watching.
7. Horseback Riding: There are many stables that offer guided horseback riding adventures through trails that bloom beautifully during the spring. Whether you’re an experienced rider or a beginner, this activity offers a different way to experience the outdoors while connecting with these majestic animals, I am honestly still scared of horses after I did this activity once, but I’m willing to give it another try - the experience was worth getting over my fear, or whatever that was that day.
8. Outdoor Movie Nights: I have BEEN wanting to try an outdoor cinema vibe. As the evenings become warmer, attending an outdoor movie night sounds and seen like it could be a a fun and relaxing way to spend time with friends and family. Watching a movie under the stars? Yes please, definitely sign me up for THAT.
9. Outdoor Festivals: Spring is the season of outdoor festivals, whether it’s music, art, food, or cultural events. It’s always a good idea to go outside and enjoy some good music, sing, dance, and eat your heart out.
10. Fruit Picking: Fruit picking is a wonderful way to support local farmers while enjoying the freshness of the season’s bounty—and it’s always fun to nibble as you pick! I recently discovered a place where I can go berry picking somewhere here in Jo’burg, and I can’t wait to try it out.
Spring is a season full of possibilities and new beginnings. Embrace the outdoors and make the most of the beautiful weather . So, grab your gear and step outside, spring is waiting to offer its gifts of joy, beauty, and adventure.
Embrace the fresh air, the sunshine, and the new possibilities. Your body (and mind) will thank you!
