#AWPOWERFIFTY: Linda Gieskes-Mwamba
What motivated you to become an entrepreneur OR take your career in the direction you did? Is having your own business OR this role you are in something you always wanted?
What motivated me to become an entrepreneur and take my career in the direction I did was a combination of passion, purpose, and a desire for independence. I've always had a deep love for beauty and a curiosity to explore natural ingredients, which led me to create my own products. Having my own business and pursuing this career path was something I always dreamt of but never envisaged would happen for me. So, having my own brand and celebrating our 10 years in the industry is such a blessing.
Which woman has positively impacted you in your career/business? And what is the one lesson she taught you?
One woman who has positively impacted my career is my grandmother, Marie-AdelaΓ―de Lopes. Despite facing challenges and having limited formal education, she was a successful businesswoman who raised her children alone and provided for them through her restaurant and sewing skills. The one lesson she taught me is the importance of resilience and hard work. She showed me that with determination and a strong work ethic, I can overcome any obstacle and achieve my goals.
How do you define success?
I define success as not just achieving my goals, but also making a positive impact on others and the world around me. Success to me is more than professional or financial, it encompasses all aspects of one's life, one's love for what one does, one's impact on others and leaving a lasting legacy that reflects my values and beliefs.
One insight for anyone interested in the industry you are working in?
For anyone interested in the beauty industry, my insight would be to know your 'why' and to stick to that. There are so many great beauty brands that in order to create a great legacy brand that will stand the test of time, you'll need to have a strong why. Your 'why is the fuel that allows you to keep going despite trends and whatever is popular at any point in time. It will also allow you to differentiate your brand from another and to truly stand out.
What is your one key guiding principle in your work life?
My key guiding principle in my work life is to always strive for excellence and authenticity. I believe in doing things with passion and integrity, and to never compromise on quality. This principle guides me in every decision I make and ensures that I stay true to myself and my values.
What do you believe is the most impactful and immediate action your industry can take to Accelerate Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment. (this is the theme for INTERNATIONAL WOMENβS DAY in 2024)
I believe that the most impactful and immediate action in the beauty industry, an industry powered by women through their consumption, can take to accelerate gender equality is to create more opportunities for women to lead and succeed. This includes promoting women to leadership positions, closing the gender pay gap, and providing support and resources for women entrepreneurs. By empowering women economically, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
